Our hackathon becomes Makers Festival

Last year at Product Hunt we ran our first ever online hackathon with over 4,000 makers competing from across the world.

This year we’re calling our hackathon a Makers Festival to encourage all types of makers, creators and tinkerers to participate and launch a project.

What it means to be a Maker

Before I joined the Product Hunt team I didn’t consider myself a Maker. Even though I had made plenty of stuff, I had never shared any of my projects with the community.

I thought that the Product Hunt community would expect my work to be perfect or technical. I now understand I had the wrong attitude.

Being a Maker is about showcasing your ideas (often in the simplest form) to solve a problem, to raise awareness or simply to delight others.

There’s a Maker in all of us whether we’re writing code or painting canvases. Building bots or knitting scarves. Hacking sites or remixing tracks.

Solve a problem for a theme or think outside the box

This year we have six themes. Your project could relate to one of them or you can work on something unrelated. The choice is yours.

Our themes are listed below with linked Product Hunt collections to inspire you.

  1. Voice & Audio
  2. Health & Beauty
  3. Inclusion
  4. Brain Stuff
  5. Remote Workers
  6. Social Impact

We also made a No Code collection to remind you that coding is not an essential ingredient for launching a project.

What are you waiting for?

Fun fact: Product Hunt began as an email newsletter, born from idea to conception in 20 minutes. The early community’s response gave us conviction it could be so much more, and v1 of the site was built over Thanksgiving break, almost exactly five years ago. Remember, you can get pretty far in just a weekend.

Makers Festival is your opportunity to make something happen. Start a project and see what your seed of an idea will blossom into!

Sign up here to get involved.
